Minnesota Youth Program
Purpose
This program provides short-term employment and training services to economically disadvantaged and at-risk youth in all 87 Minnesota counties.
Customers and Services
Customers are low-income and at-risk youth, ages 14 to 21, who lack academic and “applied” skills considered critical for current and future workplace needs. In SFY 2009, 53 percent of participants were basic skills-deficient, 50 percent had a disability, 32 percent received public assistance; and 38 percent were from communities of color. Services are provided through a network of public and private nonprofit youth service providers; WorkForce Centers; and partnerships with local education agencies, where youth can earn service learning credit or academic credit for work experience. Service providers are held accountable to local Workforce Councils/Youth Councils. In SFY 2009, 93 percent of customers received education/training, 81 percent received work experience, 65 percent were mentored, and 46 percent received post-secondary exploration and career guidance.
