Over-the-Year Employment Change

Minnesota lost 75,000 jobs over the year in January, down 2.8 percent from one year ago.  This is an improvement over previous months in which over the year job losses had risen to 4.5 percent.

The education and health services sector continued to grow over the year, up 2,700 jobs.  Government also grew, up 300 jobs from one year ago.  All other sectors lost jobs, with the largest declines in manufacturing, down 31,200 jobs, trade, transportation and utilities, down 14,300 jobs, and construction, down 8,200 jobs over the year.

Note: As is the normal practice, the monthly employment estimates for April 2008 through December 2009 were revised so that they correspond to the administrative records coming from the unemployment insurance program.

Nationally, the rate of annual job loss improved from a drop of 3.6 percent in December (based on revised numbers) to a drop of 3.0 percent in January.
