On a seasonally adjusted basis the CPI-U decreased 0.1 percent in March after increasing 0.4 percent in February. The March CPI-U decreased 0.4 percent from one year ago, the first 12-month decrease in the CPI-U since August 1955. The index for energy declined 3 percent in March after rising 3.3 percent in February. The food index fell 0.1 percent in March, the same decrease as in February. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent following 0.2 percent increases in both February and January.
