U.S. Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U)

On a seasonally adjusted basis the CPI-U rose 0.1 percent in May after remaining unchanged in April from March. The May CPI-U decreased 1.3 percent from May 2008, following a 0.7 percent decrease from April 2008 to April 2009. This is the largest year-over-year decrease since April 1950. The index for energy rose 0.2 percent in May, following a 2.4 percent decrease in April. The food index fell 0.2 percent in May, the fourth consecutive month-to-month decline this year. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent in May, following a 0.3 percent increase in April.
