On a seasonally adjusted basis the May CPI-U declined 0.2 percent from April. The May CPI-U increased 2 percent from May 2009. The index for energy decreased 2.9 percent from April to May. This decrease drove the All Items index decrease. The food index remained unchanged from April. The May index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent from April, highlighting only the second month-to-month increase this year.
