U.S. Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers

On a seasonally adjusted basis the May CPI-U increased 0.2 percent from April and increased 3.6 percent from May 2010. The energy index, which has seen large increases of 2.2 to 4.0 percent per month over the last five months, declined by 1.0 percent for the first time in 10 months. The only energy subcategories that saw increases over the month were Energy Services, up 0.6 percent, and within that, Electricity, up 0.8 percent, both fairly typical. The food index increased by 0.4 percent over the month, the same as in April, contributing to an over-the-year increase of 3.5 percent. The May index for all items less food and energy rose 0.3 percent over the month and rose 1.5 percent from May 2010.
