U.S. Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI_U)

On a seasonally adjusted basis the CPI-U was unchanged in April after decreasing 0.1 percent in March. The April CPI-U decreased 0.7 percent from April 2008, following a 0.4 percent decrease from March 2008 to March 2009. This is the first time since 1955 that the nation has had two consecutive monthly over-the-year decreases. The index for energy declined 2.4 percent in April, following a 3 percent decrease in March. The food index fell 0.2 percent in April, following a 0.1 percent decline in March. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.3 percent in April, following 0.2 percent increases in January, February and. March.
