U.S. Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U)
October 2010
On a seasonally adjusted basis the September CPI-U increased 0.1 percent from August. The September CPI-U increased 1.1 percent from September 2009. The index for energy increased 0.7 percent in September, the third monthly increase in a row. The food index rose 0.3 percent. The index for all items less food and energy was essentially unchanged from July and August. However, the 12-month change in the index for all items less food and energy, at 0.8 percent, was the lowest 12-month change since March 1961. Because of the small change in the CPI-U for the 12-month period ending in September 2010, there will be no cost-of-living adjustment increase in Social Security benefits for 2011.
