U.S. Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U)
October 2011
On a seasonally adjusted basis the September CPI-U increased 0.3 percent from August and increased 3.9 percent from September 2010, not seasonally adjusted. While most industries saw minor increases, there were exceptions. Energy was up 2.0 percent for the month, driven by an increase in gasoline prices of 2.9 percent. While substantial, that increase is consistent with others this year, but fuel prices are highly volatile. The other exception was in apparel, which was down 1.1 percent for the month, nearly reversing a similar gain from last month. The September index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent over the month and rose 2.0 percent from September 2010.
