Apply for Trade Adjustment Assistance
The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program helps workers who have lost their jobs or had work hours or wages reduced as a result of foreign trade activity.
The company that laid you off – or is expecting to lay you off in the near future – has been certified to participate. That means you are eligible to apply. Here's what you do next:
1) Obtain Your Petition Information
Select this Petition Information link. A new window will open in your web browser. Scroll down the list alphabetically until you find your company's name. Write down:
- Your company's petition number
- The certification date
- The expiration date
- The impact date
Use this information to complete the "Petition Information" section of the TAA Application. If you cannot find your company listed, please, contact the TAA Office at 651-259-7543.
2) Read The Handbooks
Select the appropriate program handbooks and read them carefully for details about what the programs can do for you.
Are you considering training? Try out the Training Plan Workbook:
- Research the labor market
- Explore careers that interest you
- Locate training institutions that provide the training you need
- Develop a training plan that you can discuss with your Dislocated Worker counselor
3) Complete the Waiver of Training Form
For petitions numbered lower than 69,999 and in between 80,000 and 80,999: If you will not begin your training within 8 weeks of your petition's certification date or 16 weeks after your layoff date (whichever is later), you and your Dislocated Worker Program counselor must sign the waiver form and date it before the deadline.
For petitions numbered 70,000 to 79,999 and above 81,000: If you will not begin your training within 26 weeks of either your layoff date or your petition’s certification date (whichever is later), you and your Dislocated Worker Program counselor must sign the waiver form and date it before the deadline.
Send the Waiver Form to the TAA unit immediately.
4) Complete the TRA and TAA Applications
First, all participants must complete the TRA Application.
Second, select and complete the application that is best for you. Your Dislocated Worker Program Counselor can help you complete the application.
Submitting the Application
Your Dislocated Worker Program counselor must give final approval before you submit your TAA Application. Be sure to discuss the submission process with your counselor.
Health Coverage Tax Credit
TAA recipients may be eligible for help paying health insurance premiums. The Health Coverage Tax Credit can reduce premium costs by 72.5% percent. Download the HCTC Fact Sheet.
