Labor Department Provides 1.2 Million Grant to Assist Southern Minnesota Storm Recovery Efforts
|
ST. PAUL – The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $1,160,391 National Emergency Grant (NEG) awarded to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to create temporary employment to assist clean-up and recovery efforts following severe storms and flooding that struck southern Minnesota.
"The recent storms and flooding inflicted significant damage on public infrastructure across southern Minnesota,” said DEED Commissioner Dan McElroy. "The rapid deployment of these NEG funds will help put people to work and help our communities get back on their feet following this natural disaster.”
Funds will be used to create about 70 temporary jobs to assist in recovery efforts related to damage caused by flooding. Of the $1,160,391 grant, $580,195 will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.
The NEG will fund temporary jobs in Dodge, Freeborn, Goodhue, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca and Watonwan counties. People in the affected counties who are interested in jobs under the NEG should go to their local WorkForce Center for more information. WorkForce Center locations are available at www.PositivelyMinnesota.com/wfc or by calling 1-888-GET-JOBS.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
