MJSP funding will support a partnership between Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) and two businesses – Olmsted Medical Center (OMC), located in Rochester and Harmony Enterprises (manufacturer of hydraulic balers and compactors) of Harmony. RCTC will work with company experts to develop four new courses – Leadership Workshop in Successful Execution; How to Manage a Project; How to Improve Processes; and Workflow and New Service Line Development – which will be delivered to 58 employees (50 from OMC and 8 from Harmony Enterprises) at their business site. CEUs will be provided for all courses. This training will address the business’s process improvement needs and help them to remain competitive within their industries. Rochester Community & Technical College will gain knowledge and expertise from the business subject matter experts and through the development of on-line training which will expand the schools ability to meet the needs of other companies. Winnebago Manufacturing Company is a metal fabrication job shop in Blue Earth. Through MJSP funding, Minnesota State University Mankato will customize and deliver four courses to Winnebago’s 30 employees to assist them in meeting the ISO 9001 certification requirements. In addition, all employees will receive Lean/Six Sigma training to provide continuous quality improvement tools required, but not included in the ISO training. Managers and quality/technical personnel will receive additional training to guide future quality and certification processes. This project will give employees durable and transferable skills and will help the company to remain competitive. ISO certification will permit access to new customers and growth of the company. Minnesota Twist Drill (MTD) in Chisholm currently employs 67 individuals who manufacture drill bits for the private label and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) markets. Due to a recent expansion of the company, they are hiring 55 additional employees. Through MJSP funding, Hibbing Community College will train 63 employees (seven current; 55 new) using cooperatively-developed curriculum that includes Shop Skills; Rebuild of Hydraulic Cylinders, Pumps and Motors; and Trouble Shooting Electrical and Electronic Systems. CEUs will be awarded. The training will prepare MTD to efficiently meet current and new production demands and allow them to remain competitive in the cutting tools industry. Hibbing Community College will gain experience with the newly-developed hydraulics and electronic training, on equipment which they haven’t training on before. This partnership is between two schools: Minnesota State Community and Technical College and Alexandria Technical College, and nine small, rural members of the Tri State Manufacturing Association (TSMA). The following lists the companies by location, name and product: Alexandria – Aagard Group (food packager); Brandon – Voyager Aluminum (aluminum extrusion; Cosmos – Falcon Industries (plastic injection molding; Elbow Lake – AmeriFab (metal job shop) and Cosmos Enterprises (metal/plastic machined parts); Fergus Falls – StoneL (fluid control systems) and Innova Industries (metal fabrication) and Northern Contours (wood cabinets); and Lowry – Lowry Manufacturing Company (grain elevators). Collectively, the companies have determined a number of common training needs which will be delivered to 62 employees from the nine companies. The two schools will customize courses in Lean Office, Procurement, CNC and Set-Up Reduction for support and purchasing staff along with machinists and technicians. Courses will be held in both Alexandria and Fergus Falls. TSMA will provide some assistance with gathering information from the businesses for reporting. Wilbert Plastic Services (WPS) is a well established leader in plastics thermoforming and a major employer in the White Bear Lake area which plans to hire ten additional employees during this grant period. A collaborative effort between WPS, Century College and Hennepin Technical College will support the company’s goals of streamlining its processes, attaining ISO 14001:2004 certification as a Green Business, and promoting continued growth and profitability. A total of 161 employees (including new hires) will receive training. Century College will develop and deliver curriculum in the areas of Environmental Stewardship and ISO 14001:2004 preparation; E3: Economy, Energy and Environmental Training; Lean-Green; and Operational training that will include TMOS (Team Management Operating Systems). Hennepin Technical College (HTC) will deliver their 14-credit Plastics Manufacturing Technology course to upgrade employee skills. This project will allow both colleges the opportunity to build on-going training tools to be used within their Energy Technical degree and classes in the areas of quality and Lean-Green manufacturing. Mayo Clinic, comprised of St. Mary’s Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital, is the largest integrated medical center in the world. They are a major Rochester employer with over 32,000 employees. To achieve improved performance and efficiency, Mayo Clinic is partnering with Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) to develop and deliver a Business Analysis training program that includes skills development and certification. One-hundred and fifty (150) employees will be selected to participate in training delivered at the clinic. Management Overview of Business Analysis will introduce students to the fundamentals of business analysis in the Mayo community and provide students with best practice principles and processes within the industry. Business Analysis Core Competencies will consist of eight topics covering planning and monitoring, elicitation, solution assessment and validation. Approximately 40 employees will prepare and test for certification via the Certified Business Analysis Professionals course. All new curriculums developed for this project will result in increased capacity for the school. SAGE Electrochromics is the world leader in the development and manufacture of electronically tintable glass. A major expansion of their manufacturing facility will add about 133 new jobs during the grant period. A partnership with MN State University (MSU) Mankato will train 223 employees (incumbent and new) that will focus on manufacturing and organizational effectiveness by addressing two major workforce challenges: high growth-high tech and technology skills and education gaps. MSU will customize and deliver seven courses including Strategic Management for High Growth Companies and Budget Management. South Central Community College will deliver Lean Manufacturing and Lean Six Sigma with engineering personnel receiving Black Belt Certification. Normandale Community College (NCC) will blend existing program offerings to deliver Electrochromic Glass Manufacturing Technology courses. This training will help SAGE improve efficiency to support the demand of their new manufacturing facility. SAGE employees will acquire new skills that will increase their marketability and opportunity to advance within the company. MSU will gain capacity with the opportunity to utilize vacuum technology curriculum through Normandale which was previously developed through a MJSP grant. Marvin Windows and Doors of Warroad is one of the top three manufacturers of wood windows and doors in the world. Since over 60% of Marvin’s products are high-end and customized, it is critical to the company’s continued growth and success that new, highly-skilled “Woodcraft” Technicians are developed as the older Woodcraft workers retire over the next few years. Through MJSP funding, Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State) will work with Marvin to implement Woodcraft Technician training. A total of 170 employees will receive an Introduction to Succession Planning course provided by Marvin. Ten current Woodcraft workers will receive Mentor training by M State. Approximately 60 non-Woodcraft employees will be selected for the Woodcraft Technician training which will include topics on Special Cut Techniques, Printer Interpretation and Complementary Material Characteristics. Trainees can, if they wish, complete additional coursework for college credit. M State faculty will increase their knowledge of custom manufacturing skills and succession planning, which will be beneficial to other companies. MJSP funds will support a Pathways project between Summit Academy OIC and Stock Roofing of Fridley, a sole provider of green roofing installation services in Minnesota. Summit will screen and select 150 unemployed/underemployed individuals to participate in their 20-week Pre-Apprentice Carpentry/Green Technician Training Program. Students will begin with 10 weeks of Pre-Apprentice Carpentry covering topics that include Construction Safety, Blue Print Reading and Carpentry Math. This is followed by two weeks of training through Mortenson Construction on concrete forming; five weeks of weatherization training resulting in certification; and three weeks of commercial and green roofing training through Stock Roofing. Students who successfully complete the coursework will earn 90 hours which they can apply toward apprenticeships in a variety of skilled construction professions. Stock is committed to hiring up to 80 graduates of this project. Summit will also partner with American Indian OIC for recruitment, job placement assistance and post-placement support to address job retention issues. This project will integrate green collar jobs into Summit’s curriculum and provide disadvantaged individuals with the opportunity to learn job skills for entry into the construction and green roofing trades.
