Before hiring an interpreter, you may want to ask the referral agency:

When requesting an interpreter, be prepared to provide the following information:

The State of Minnesota has contracted with vendors to provide sign language interpreter services; for a complete listing of contract vendors, see http://www.mmd.admin.state.mn.us/pdf/s-884(5).pdf. There are also other referral services. The following is a brief statewide list of referral services. It is not intended as a comprehensive list, nor does the Office of Diversity & Equal Opportunity at the Department of Employment and Economic Development represent or endorse any of the following vendors.

1. Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD)

The Department of Human Services' Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division has awarded CSD the state contract for interpreter referral services for the following areas:

  • Base rate of $90.00 for the first 2 hours. Rates are based on more than 48 hours notice for services provided between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • Services performed from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. will be billed at a base rate of $100.00 and services from 12:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. or with less than 48 hours notice will be billed at a base rate of $110.00. *
  • Add an additional $5.00 an hour for a tactile interpreter.
  • Cancellation policy is 48 hours notice.

* Two Interpreter Policy: When an assignment extends for a period of two hours or longer and the interpreter is signing non-stop, a second interpreter is required.

2. All Hands Interpreting Services (AHIS)

AHIS is owned by Suzanne Juberian. All interpreters who work with AHIS are NAD level 4 or 5 certified CT/CI. AHIS also employs interpreters who are certified in oral interpreting and legal interpreting.

Hours of operation are Monday - Friday,7:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.; and weekends, Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

  • All billing is done directly through AHIS. The agency requesting the interpreter(s) will receive only one bill. Rates include both the interpreter’s hourly rate and a referral fee.
  • The first 2 hours are billed out at $100.00; $50.00 per hour, per interpreter thereafter. AHIS will negotiate rates with agencies, if interpreter needs are ongoing. There is an additional fee if the request is made with less than a 24 hour notice. *

3. American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting Services

ASL is an interpreter referral center with an additional focus on employment advocacy and training. Ms. Nygren-Olson provides Deaf Awareness Presentations to employers.

  • Interpreters bill for their time and ASL bills for referral. A referral fee is charged for each interpreter each day or for each job.
  • Each referral costs $29.00 or 10 referrals at $195.00 (Membership rate).
  • There is a rush fee of $39.00 or 2 referrals from the Membership.
  • ASL IS also has a flat rate of $109.00 for first 2 hours, includes referral fee, continuing at $45.00 per hour, per interpreter. *
  • Cancellation policy is 48 hours notice.

4. Metro Interpreter Connection (MIC)

MIC’s office hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

  • Referral fee is $25.00, per interpreter, per day. Every 11th referral fee is free, buy 10, get one free. Rush referral is $35.00, per interpreter.
  • Interpreters negotiate their own hourly rate. Interpreters do their own billing.

  • Referral fees are incurred and are not subject to cancellation after an interpreter has been placed and confirmed. *

Service: SLICES provides qualified, certified interpreting services throughout the State of Minnesota, specializing in the greater 11-county Twin Cities area, northern and southwestern Minnesota.
Fees: The average interpreter fee is $50.00 hr. All services are negotiable and designed to meet the needs of the customer.

Fees: Hourly rate is at a minimum equal to 2 hours (e.g., $74.00 for $37.00/hour). These rates apply for work 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; earlier or later hours are billed at a 10% differential.
For locations outside the metro area there will be a portal-to-portal charge or mileage charge. This rate is negotiable.

Service: This is an interpreter firm. There are 7 interpreters on staff and you will know immediately if there is one available. It is not a referral service. They do mostly legal interpreting, but would consider general interpreting also. Hours are 7:30 - 5:00 daily.
